The much celebrated shekel of Tyre was the main silver coin for the powerful maritime city in Phoenicia. The coin is the most likely candidate for the “30 pieces of silver” paid to Judas Iscariot to betray Jesus Christ. The coin was used to pay the temple tax in Jerusalem and was prized because of the high silver content of 94 %. The piece offered here is of considerable interest as it was minted during the life of Jesus himself.
